Future directions of professional photographers: A case study of changing hats between journalism and humanitarian photography

Abstract This article examines the professional values of self-employed photographers and other communication professionals who have worked for both journalism humanitarian nongovernmental organisations (NGOs). These face current changes in media work environment expand their reach to different fields find new opportunities. The study focuses on photographers’ motivations addition NGO–journalism relations. findings show that pushing factors journalistic field, along with pulling NGO work, motivate choose advocacy work. When change from photojournalism photography, they must adhere ethics mix existing which may occasionally contradict photojournalistic working methods or marketing fundraising images at NGOs, causing ethical dilemmas. Finally, a background help NGOs gain news publicity, yet are rarely able agenda.
